The BTechEd (Hons) Degree Programme

Background

Scotland has a long established tradition in engineering and technology which is reflected in the history of the curriculum within the national education system.

Technical subjects and the development of a technologies curriculum are recognised as a strong aspect of contemporary learning within Scotland’s secondary schools. Central to maintaining the provision of a successful technologies curriculum are committed and well qualified teachers. The Bachelor of Technological Education Degree Programme (BTechEd) was established in the late 1980s to prepare graduate teachers for this developing area of the curriculum.  Technology education, due to its demanding breadth of knowledge, understanding and skills, is best served by undergraduate study purposely designed to equip and prepare technology teachers within the early phase of professional development.

The Programme is designed to reflect this philosophy, preparing teachers of design and technology for the new technologies curriculum and to teach the range of technical subjects required by the secondary curriculum (Graphic Communication, Design and Manufacture, Engineering Science and practical courses in woodworking, metalworking and electronics).

We aim to provide opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding, skills, qualities and other attributes.  The programme is designed to prepare qualified teachers of technology capable of teaching and supporting learning across multiple aspects of the technologies curriculum, with a particular focus on secondary education in Scotland.

The Programme is managed within the University of Glasgow School of Education and our outwards research focus is based upon the continuing observation of technology education in Scotland.

Preparing to teach

The programme has been designed to meet the requirements of the benchmark standards for initial education as set by The General Teaching Council Scotland. This underlines the importance of acquiring knowledge and understanding of the relevant area of the secondary school curriculum. Graduates will be required to teach subjects and courses that contribute to the development of technological capability in learners across the Scottish education system. One consequence of the present breadth, structure and organisation of the school curriculum is a requirement for the curriculum of the degree programme to reflect this breadth in its design and content.

This has been conceptualised across four dimensions:

  • Developing the early phase professional;

  • Developing technological knowledge and understanding;

  • Developing technological skills;

  • Developing graduate attributes.

Our students, upon successful completion of their Honours Year, will be able to teach the full range of Technological Education subjects across the broad general education and the senior phase, broadly:

  • Graphic Communication

  • Design and Manufacture

  • Engineering Science

  • Craft Skills and Practical Woodworking

  • Engineering Skills

  • Design and Technology including electronics

  • A range of vocational courses developing skills for learning, life and work

Teaching Qualification

Graduates will be awarded the Degree of Bachelor of Technological Education with Honours which is an internationally recognised teaching qualification. You will be entitled to use the letters BTechEd (Hons) after your name and you will become eligible to study at Masters level (SCQF Level 11).
