Information for Applicants

Interview Guidance - Advice for your interview at the University

If you are successful in your initial UCAS application, we will invite you to an interview on campus. This is a GTCS (General Teaching Council Scotland) requirement for all ITE (initial teacher education) applicants in Scotland.

The interview will be in two parts and typically look like this:

Part 1 will be a group interview (max 10 applicants) and will last from 10am to 11am. During this session, we will show you some streaming media and you need to respond to this via a discussion forum.

Part 2 will be a 15 minute individual interview - this will be after your group interview, but on the same day. The time of the interview will be given to you upon arrival and we suggest that you be prepared to be on campus all day.

Interviews will be with Mr Lee Dunn (Degree Programme Leader) and Dr David Morrison-Love (Lecturer in Technology Education). You should report to room 440 in the St Andrews Building on the day of your interview.

We will ask you three questions:

  1. Why have you applied for the programme?

  2. What experiences, hobbies and interests do you have that you feel would help you to realise your ambition in becoming a teacher?

  3. What qualities and skills do you feel an excellent teacher needs to have?

There are no right or wrong answers but we do expect you to speak clearly and to use your experiences in school or employment as a basis for the discussion. The interviews are scored and your ability to respond in a professional way will determine the outcome of the interview.

  • You should dress as a teacher would, and present yourself professionally.

  • You DO NOT need to bring a portfolio or examples of work but you may do so if you wish. This can be presented at the individual interview.

  • You may ask us questions about teaching, the programme, school or about the university.

  • If you cannot attend your allocated interview, you must email our Admissions Team for another suitable date and time.

  • You must bring photographic ID and evidence of any qualifications that you have been awarded.

The streaming media here, will articulate this information in visual and audio form.
