Facilities and Resources

Design Studios, MakerSpace and Glasgow Clyde College

Our facilities are located across rooms 440 and 450a in the St Andrews Building.

Our teaching spaces are equipped with an interactive electronic whiteboard (Rm 440) and twin high definition projectors, motorised screens and multimedia centre (Rm 450a). Both rooms have digital visualisers and / or an A3 scanner.

We use PCs for computer work - these have been upgraded to allow us to run intensive graphic and design software packages. Software: Autodesk Inventor 2016; PTC CREO Parametric 3.0; Serif Design Suite (not exhaustive). Students are able to download the software for free or at a reduced cost. Additional information on university information technology can be found here: http://www.gla.ac.uk/services/it/

On campus, our students are able to access a range of equipment for modelling and rapid prototyping in our dedicated MakeSpace. Some of these resources  include:

  • Fused Deposition Modelling

  • 3D Printers

  • Laser Cutter

  • 3D Laser Scanning

  • Vinyl Cutter

  • Electronics Workstations

  • Handheld equipment and tools

  • Small power tools

  • Wire Cutters

Woodcraft and metalwork workshops are currently accessed via our partner campus at Glasgow Clyde College.

The School of Education - The St Andrews Building

The School of Education, within the College of Social Sciences, has deep roots within the educational traditions of the University of Glasgow and the surrounding environment of Scottish Higher Education.  These roots include the heritage of Scottish teacher education, of adult and lifelong learning and of renowned centres for research into educational policy and practice such as the Scottish Centre for Research in Education (SCRE).

In keeping with the identity and ambition of a major international and research-led University, the School of Education has maintained and renewed these indigenous traditions by developing a wealth of fresh opportunities for those who wish to study with scholars of international reputation across a diverse spectrum of educational thought and practice.

The St. Andrew's building is well equipped with teaching rooms, meeting rooms, lecture theatre, gym hall, music and drama studios and science and IT labs. Most of the teaching rooms have high speed access to the Internet, high quality audio and visual equipment and interactive whiteboards. Additional devices like a laptop and electronic voting systems can used in the rooms as well.

The University of Glasgow

Our stunning campus, centred on our landmark neo-Gothic Main Building, boasts over 100 listed buildings as well as modern teaching and research facilities. The University is expanding and evolving. Following the closure of the Western Infirmary site in 2015, we plan to invest £80m in new buildings and equipment and £55m on refurbishing facilities over the next five years. The new university quarter will:

  • Create  a new  large scale,  high quality, attractive urban environment in the heart of the city.

  • Embed the use of smart technology into the daily life of the campus; providing an opportunity for the research, development and scale demonstration of city scale solutions.

  • Integrate an enhanced research programme within the new campus focussed on new materials, advanced design, sensors, urban informatics, as well as health, transport, energy and environmental management.

  • Develop the University as an international focus for Future City best practice.

  • Provide world class facilities for ‘spin-in’ – enabling internationally renowned industrial partners to co-locate on the campus.
