Undergraduate Study: Year 3 (SCQF Level 9)

Teacher Education 3

Course Overview

This course is intended to augment learning within Teacher Education 3 by allowing students to explore and build up knowledge of subject specific elements of teaching and learning for Technology. Given the current transitional phase through which Scottish Education is currently progressing, the course focuses upon aspects of senior level subjects including Design & Manufacture, Graphic Communication and Engineering Science as well as selected areas relevant to the CfE Broad General Education.

The course employs a mixture of lecture sessions, discussions, reflection, group problem solving and extended reading, through which students will develop theoretical and pragmatic perspectives of teaching and learning; as well as an understanding of the critical role of research based practice. Students will develop and understanding of how to translate findings from research from a range of fields including pupil cognition, problem solving, creativity, behaviour management, assessment and instructional design into modified practice and lesson planning that will directly shape the learning for pupils in their future classrooms.

This course employs co-construction of the curriculum where students have the opportunity to decide on which topics they would like to explore in more detail with the Lecturer.

Example Topics Covered

  • Course Organisation, structure and selected teaching approaches (for Higher Engineering Science, Design & Manufacture, Graphic Communication and Practical Subjects).

  • Practical Woodworking - methods for increasing pupil accuracy.

  • Research-based Lesson Planning: Pupil Cognition and Pedagogy for Enhanced Creativity in Design

  • Ways of shaping classroom practice through bridging research with experience.

  • Running a Practical Class with Pupils with Complex Needs (including loss of sight).

  • Developing Co-Operative Learning.

  • Didactic Transposition and the Process of Making things 'Learnable'.
