Undergraduate Study: Year 2 (SCQF Level 8)

Teacher Education 2

Course Overview

Teacher education in year two, across all concurrent programmes, looks to continue and deepen the understanding and capacity of students to support learning and undertake the role of the teacher. The emphasis on developing professional values, ideas and dispositions builds on year one. Students will also be prepared for school experience in the context of the approaches to teaching and learning together with specialist knowledge and skills required by their subject.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a good foundational knowledge and understanding of assessment theory together with its application in supporting and confirming learning.

  2. Recognise the teacher’s duties, and inherent demands, in providing for the additional support needs of all pupils. Students should also demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the history and foundational values and ideas that have informed approaches to providing additional support for learning.

  3. Characterise both common and complex needs that require additional support for learning, together with the leading strategies, approaches and organisational arrangements used in practice.

  4. Display an emergent understanding of their role in contributing to a whole school focus on health and well being and in promoting numeracy across the Scottish curriculum.

  5. Recognise and comprehend the teacher’s duties with respect to pupil support, pastoral care and, in particular, child protection.

  6. In preparation for teaching practice, focused on a number of stages and levels, engage with, and display, the necessary knowledge and skills required within their subject domains.
